How to protect your carpets personally

To protect your carpets and upholstery we recommend that you get them professionally cleaned every 12 - 18 months.

Of course, if your commercial premises have high foot traffic, we would recommend you have your carpets cleaned every 2 - 4 months.

To make your carpets and upholstery last longer follow the tips below.

Removing tough stains:

• Immediately scrape up as much of the spill as possible.
• Blot to remove excess residue
• Use a wet/dry vacuum if the spill is large
• Douse spill with warm water (not hot) and blot with a cloth
• Avoid rubbing the stain as this causes abrasion to the carpet and fluffs the pile.
• If the stain is still visible, mix warm water (1/2 pint) and a non-bleach solution (2 tsp)
• Washing powder or laundry detergent works well
• Cover the stain and let it soak for approximately 5minutes
• Rinse with warm water and blot thoroughly to extract water
• Repeat until all the detergent is removed
• Absorb remaining moisture with layers of white kitchen roll weighted down with a glass
• For best results, leave it over night
• Vacuum when completely dry

Hoovering tips:

• Always have the cleaner head set at the correct height for the carpet pile
• Vacuum slowly enough so that the suction can draw the soiling out of the carpet
• Otherwise loose soiling and dust disperses itself back into the carpet pile

Dealing with dust mites:

• Use a Hoover that extracts particles of dust up to-0.1 micron.
• Use a carpet cleaner with an attachment so that upholstery can be cleaned monthly
• Air each room for at least a couple of hours a week
• Air and hoover mattresses, duvets and pillows regularly
• Launder bed linen at 60 degrees centigrade
• Kill dust mites in pillows or duvets by putting them in a deep freeze overnight
• Soak bedding for 30 - 60 minutes in eucalyptus oil (100ml) with a liquid detergent (25ml)

Removing chewing gum:

• Apply a chewing gum chemical to the affected area
• Apply steam with a gun and remove with blunt scraper
• The gum is safely removed and with no damage to the carpet
